Duluth Bargaining Update & Strike Vote

28 Jul

Duluth Nurses: While we had hoped to reach an agreement with St. Luke’s and SMDC by the end of July, it does not appear that this will be the case. Because of that some additional bargaining dates have been scheduled in August at each facility:

  • August 6 and 10 at St. Luke’s
  • August 5, 9 and 12 at SMDC

In addition, we have important All-Nurse Meetings coming up:

  • St. Luke’s Nurses: August 11 at 8:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
  • SMDC Nurses: August 16 at 8:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Finally, nurses at both Duluth hospitals are voting on August 18th to either ratify the St. Luke’s and SMDC contract offers, or to authorize a one-day strike. Voting takes place at the United Methodist Church or ‘Coppertop’ church on August 18th from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Having been on vacation, I feel a bit out of touch. Other than patient safety/staffing issues, what other items are being negotiated at this point? Where will the all nurse meeting take place? Thanks…

I feel there also has to be dialouge with managemnet regarding decreaseing the amount or frequency of nurses doind non-nursing work i.e.HUC. I was last sat and sun the charge nurse and HUC then sunday charge nurse HUc and had a patient. Monday I came on and the expectation was I would be HUC and care for 3 pts. I invoked article 23 of the contract and held my own personal mini strike and refused to be HUC and infomed management they had better find someone quick cause charts were piling up and the phone was ringing off the hook. My feeling they do not want to hire new HUCs because OH hey in January Encompass will fix that. Hey peolpe it’s only August!
