Duluth – SMDC Bargaining Update (August 13)

13 Aug

In our last scheduled bargaining session with management of SMDC we started out cautiously optimistic. Ultimately we ended without an agreement we can recommend.

We are recommending that you reject this contract and vote to authorize a one day strike.

It is clear that a strong strike vote is what we will need to move SMDC to respect us as nurses.

Management has told us they are going to change and improve staffing at SMDC. It is clear that we need to make sure that management follows through on its promises in writing, and the language we have in our last, best offer from SMDC does not allow us that. In terms of our language regarding temporary unit closure to admissions, the language SMDC has proposed falls short of allowing us as nurses to use our judgment when we can safely take another assignment. As with any contract, some economics are important. These proposals from SMDC fell short of the mark as well.

The details of our proposals and management’s final offer are posted on the MNA Web site.

As a committee, we cannot recommend this offer from management.

They do not trust us as nurses and our legal and ethical obligation to advocate for our patients.

  • SMDC All-Nurse meetings are Monday August 16th at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church 325 E. 3rd street. At 0800, 1330, 1600 and 2000, the information will be there and we will tell you why we cannot recommend this contract and are recommending a vote to authorize a one day strike.
  • On Wednesday, August 18th, voting for both Duluth hospitals will be at the United Methodist Church “Coppertop Church”, 230 E. Skyline Parkway, from 0630 until 2000. Bring a state issued photo ID to vote.
